St. Paul MinnesotaThe Basics

Greenhouse Recovery Center was founded in 1987 by executive director Stephen Mowry, in St. Paul, Minnesota. Greenhouse provides transitional living for men in 12 houses including the main residence, which solely accepts Rule 25 clients, and 11 sober living homes. Mowry is a Vietnam-era Army veteran, and the Greenhouse Recovery Center also caters to clients who are veterans. Clients at Greenhouse Recovery Center work toward independence and utilize the 12 steps in their lives. At the helm of Greenhouse Recovery Center is program director Kirk Larson who originally came to the facility as a client and has been clean for more than 15 years.

Accommodations and Amenities

Greenhouse Recovery Center accommodates 98 clients in 12 houses. Rule 25 clients reside at the Greenhouse’s main facility, which is located inside a historic white mansion that has red and blue trim. The house’s exterior includes a wrap around porch with red columns, foliage and an old-fashioned style street lamp.

The sober living houses include a striking Queen Anne located at the corner of a residential street, as well as a Victorian, a split-level houses and an American craftsman. The interiors are eclectically designed, but most houses have tiled floors and white or beige colored walls. The Victorian includes a cozy alcove with windows, vintage style armchairs, a quaint table and an old fashioned style lamp. At the Greenhouse Recovery Center, all residents are housed in furnished, single-occupancy rooms.

At the main facility, clients are provided with food, which they prepare in fully equipped kitchens. At the remaining homes, residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Amenities include laundry facilities, utilities, cable TV and a landline phone. Each house has a live in residential manager. Additionally, a general manager checks in with all clients, on a regular basis.

Rules and Regulations

The Greenhouse transitional living program accepts clients who have successfully met the criteria of a Rule 25 Assessment and Ramsey County Human Services pays for their room and board. Rule 25 clients have more structure than the other residents. All potential clients must undergo personal interviews with staff. The length of stay is six months and the program includes participation in outpatient treatment and attendance at regular 12-step meetings, per the client’s individualized recovery plan. The curfew is 10 pm seven days a week. Clients must perform household chores, and are encouraged to enroll in school or look for employment. An onsite nurse is available to address health concerns, help schedule medical appointments, and provide health education.

At the sober living houses, length of stay is up to the individual. Clients must attend two outside 12-step meetings a week and be at a local Sunday night speaker meeting. Other requirements include performing household chores, getting a sponsor, working the steps and finding employment. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and on the weekends, the men are free to come and go as they please.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Greenhouse Recovery Center, residents who relapse are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, with the belief that sometimes people deserve a second chance, provided that they are willing to get back on track.

Extras

Five residents have lived at Greenhouse Recovery Center for over a decade. Clients can stay at the sober living homes for the rest of their lives, if desired.

In Summary

The Greenhouse Recovery Center provides an environment that is both structured and empathetic towards men in early recovery. Larson is passionate about the 12 steps, and believes that if he can stay clean and sober, anyone can. Additionally, staff is always on hand to provide support and guidance. The Greenhouse Recovery Center is a wonderful option for newly clean and sober men seeking transitional housing in the St. Paul area.

Trinity Sober Homes

Trinity Sober HomesThe Basics

Trinity Sober Homes is a non-profit organization that provides Catholic-based sober living for mature men, ages 40 and older in St. Paul, Minnesota. Trinity was founded in 2010 by Father Martin Fleming, who is also a retired US Army colonel and executive director Tim Murray. Murray, who is in recovery, lived with Father Fleming for two years while he was a newcomer. During that time, they received requests from other men asking for Catholic faith-based sober living homes. Their shared mission is to introduce clients to various components of the Catholic faith, if so desired, as well as provide them with spiritual coaching, which is suited for their needs. At Trinity Sober Homes, it is not a prerequisite for clients to be Catholic.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Trinity Sober Homes organization manages three majestic homes located in the historic Ramsey Hill neighborhood and the Merriam Park district. The houses are named after the Archangels Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael. The St. Michael House is 5,100 square feet and was built in 1900, and is a neoclassical style two-story brick house with a brick façade and a yellow porch with columns. The St. Michael house accommodates 12 men in single occupancy rooms, and features a meditation room, Trinity Gardens and a chapel, as well as a spacious common area with a flat screen TV and leather couches. Trinity Gardens at St. Michael’s house includes a rock waterfall, solar lights, Old World stone benches, a statue of a praying angel, ample foliage, flowers and hanging potted plants.

The St. Gabriel’s House is a spacious 6,000 square foot split-level house with pale red trim, blue shingles, and grey stucco. The house features sconces, and a birdbath statue of St. Francis of Assisi in the midst of a sprawling, landscaped garden. St. Gabriel’s accommodates 14 men, all in single rooms. St. Raphael’s accommodates 15 men, and the interior has a mediaeval quality. The house features a chapel with stained glass windows, a spacious living room with Americana wall to wall bookshelves filled with antique books, leather armchairs, a coffee table and a fireplace. At Trinity Sober Homes, clients reside in uniquely furnished single rooms, which include full or twin sized beds, and ornate antique furniture. Each bedroom is named after one of the spiritual principles of the 12 steps.

At Trinity Sober Homes, clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. On a monthly basis, a family style meal is provided for the residents after they attend mass at church. Amenities include cable TV, utilities and Wi-Fi. Each residence has a live-in house manager.

Rules and Regulations

Potential clients must have a minimum of 30 days of verified sobriety, or have successfully undergone a minimum of 30 days of residential treatment. A six-month minimum length of stay is required. Trinity Sober Homes operates on five basic rules, which include no alcohol or drugs, no violence or threats, no weapons and no sexual activity on the premises. Additionally, clients must pay their fees on time.

Other requirements are referred to as “strong suggestions.” When a client once asked what a strong suggestion was, Fleming used the following analogy as an example. “When parachuting, it is strongly suggested that you pull the ripcord for the best landing.” At Trinity Sober Homes, strong suggestions, on a weekly basis, include attending three 12-step meetings, performing household chores, meeting with a sponsor at least once, working a minimum of 30 hours or volunteering, as well as doing community service between one and two hours. Since clients are mature male adults, there is no curfew. This freedom allows clients an opportunity to work on accountability. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. The house maintains a zero tolerance policy and residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately.

Extras

Spiritual coaching is included in the fee, and clients receive two bi-monthly one-hour individual sessions. Coaching sessions include monthly reviews, life coaching and written recovery planning. There are seven spiritual coaches, and men are designated the coach who best suits their beliefs. There is one coach who works with men who just believe in a Higher Power, as well as one that focuses on providing assistance to those who belong to nondenominational sects. There is also a coach for devout Catholic residents.

The average length of stay at Trinity Sober Homes is 13 months or more, and 71% of clients maintain their sobriety for a year or longer, after their stay. Trinity Sober Homes is a member of the Minnesota Association of Sober Homes (MASH), which demands high standards from its affiliates.

In Summary

Trinity Sober Homes provides excellent housing for men, ages 40 and older, who seek Catholic faith-based support. Additionally, Trinity Sober Homes is deeply rooted in the 12 steps, and clients will be able to utilize the program’s principles in their day-to-day lives. The lovely houses look like they should be featured in Architectural Digest, but most importantly, Trinity Sober Homes operates on the concept that mature men need an age-appropriate sober living which allows them to heal from the damages of substance addiction.

Minneapolis MinnesotaThe Basics

Founded in 1975 in the Minneapolis suburb of Golden Valley, Minnesota, Damascus Way Re-Entry Center is a non-profit organization that provides faith-based male-only transitional housing for criminal justice clients who have recently left prison, as well as financially challenged men who seek safe and structured sober living. Their mission is to help clients discard unhealthy, destructive lifestyles, learn new ways to live and become productive members of society. In 2006, Damascus Way expanded, and opened a second facility for men in Rochester, Minnesota.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Golden Valley facility, a spacious two story sand-colored brick building with white trim, houses 18 men. The Rochester facility, an apartment building, has a 28-bed capacity and houses clients in two bedroom units, which include kitchens, showers and bathrooms. At Golden Valley, men are housed in quadruple-occupancy, comfortably furnished rooms. Amenities include laundry facilities, TV and recreation rooms.

At Golden Valley, one room includes large windows, two twin beds, a bunk bed, a patio chair, and two large wooden dressers. The beds include wooden headboards, and the bunks have extra built in storage space. Ample sunlight bathes the rooms, providing a sense of spaciousness. At both properties staff lives on the premises, and provides around-the-clock supervision.

At Damascus Way, clients are provided with hot meals, as well as other donated food items. Additionally, clients qualify for food stamp benefits, as well as government assistance which helps pay for additional groceries, and initial lodging costs. Financially challenged clients are provided with bus passes, clothing, and personal hygiene items.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admission, clients must have undergone detox, and pass an alcohol and drug screening. A 60-day minimum length of stay is required. Upon arrival, clients are assigned case managers, who help them design individual recovery protocols. Since a majority of the men are criminal justice clients, Department of Corrections obligations are incorporated into their curriculums.

Upon entering or leaving the facility, the men must notify staff. Additionally, they have to call the facility at various times during the day, to touch base and inform staff of their whereabouts. Requirements for all residents include obtaining and maintaining employment or enrolling in an academic schedule, including working towards a GED or going to college. Clients are provided with comprehensive vocational assistance, as well as academic counseling. Other requirements include attending Sunday church service, participating in Bible study, attending 12-step meetings, including Celebrate Recovery or AA/NA, and participating in life skills, as well as peer support groups.

Clients participate in groups and recovery support meetings during the evenings, and many men attend the Oak Grove Church in Minneapolis. Case managers provide referrals to legal and financial services, mental health providers, medical services, and recovery support groups. On a weekly basis, clients meet with their case managers to review goals, tackle personal concerns and to participate in prayer. Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Damascus Way, residents who relapse must leave the premises immediately, to ensure the safety of the entire household.

Extras

Other services besides housing include establishing a positive sober support network, creating a permanent housing plan, and making sure that they have fulfilled all probation and parole board requirements.

To successfully graduate from the program, clients must find feasible employment, receive positive reviews from employers, develop a financial budget, participate in Church and Bible study and join a 12-step recovery support group.

After clients receive employment, the 30-day cost is $360.

In Summary

Damascus Way provides clients, specifically those with a criminal justice background, a second chance at life. While the house is faith-based, clients are also provided with comprehensive services designed to help them maintain a clean and sober lifestyle, as well as opportunities for them to get back on their feet.

St. Paul MinnesotaThe Basics

Founded in 2014 by Pamela Tucker in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Como Lake House offers safe and structured sober living to an intimate number of women. Tucker, who has more than 30 years of recovery, is a Master’s-level alcohol and drug counselor, and also holds a Master’s in public affairs. Her goal is to work on policy regarding addiction, so that criminal laws can work on helping alcoholics and addicts, as opposed to incarcerating those who could benefit from treatment.

Accommodations and Amenities

The historic two-story duplex is a brownstone arts style building. While the building is 105 years old, the entire building has been entirely renovated to its original condition. The residence overlooks Lake Como, and is in close proximity to Como Zoo. Tucker usually accommodates no more than eight clients, including the house manager, Brandi. There are four women on each floor.

At Como Lake House, there are two double-occupancy rooms and four singles. A double includes twin beds, vintage style dressers, nightstands and small lamp providing ambient lighting. Rules and Regulations

At Como Lake House, potential clients must have a minimum of 30 days sobriety or have successfully completed primary care at a rehab. Between four and six months are required for a minimum length of stay. This allows women time to heal, focus on their recovery and build relationships with each other. During the first 30 days, clients must participate in mandatory weekly 20-minute check-ins with staff. Additionally, they must acquire a home group and establish a working relationship with a sponsor. While Tucker wants them to focus on their recovery during the first month she is aware that some of the women have full time work schedules, and accommodates them accordingly.

After the first 30 days, clients must touch base with staff twice a month. Requirements include performance of household chores, attendance at a minimum of three 12-step meetings a week, participation in transitional care (if applicable) a full time job or enrollment in school. Academic enrollment must be at least 32 weekly hours or a minimum of nine credits, while participation in an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), community service or work should be a 25-hour minimum weekly commitment. Clients must attend the mandatory house meeting Sunday nights at eight pm.

Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Upon arrival at Como Lake House, clients must give staff three emergency contact phone numbers, who will be contacted if a client relapses. In the case of relapse, if emergency contacts cannot be reached, the woman is taken to a local detox facility. The curfew is 11 pm and one am on Fridays and Saturday. After the first 30 days, clients are eligible for two weekly overnight passes.

sober living plymouth minnesotaThe Basics

Founded in 1991, Smith Lodge is one of several sober living facilities operated by Missions, Inc., an expansive behavioral health organization with a number of residential and outpatient treatment and transitional housing programs in Minnesota. Located in Plymouth, Smith Lodge provides a safe and structured environment for adults in early recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Smith Lodge is a modest brick home situated in a quiet, residential neighborhood. It features 19 private rooms with comfortable accommodations, including on-site laundry, living areas with TVs and a full-service kitchen. As an added bonus, the home is in close proximity to Clifton E. French Regional Park and Medicine Lake, and clients are encouraged to take walks in the area and to take advantage of their natural environment. Geared toward grooming clients for independent living, residents are expected to prepare their own meals.

Rules and Regulations

Residents are required to stay sober, submit to random and regular drug tests and obey house behavioral contracts in order remain in the programwhich can last up to two years. While some residents may be attending outpatient treatment during their stay, those who aren’t are required to attend regular 12-step meetings, seek employment, volunteer or pursue further education. Residents can also work with staff members to set goals, learn basic life skills and make connections in the local recovery community.

Extras

Clients in need of additional services such as detox, outpatient or residential treatment can be referred to one of Mission, Inc.’s other facilities. Other programs include “Home Free,” a 24/7 domestic violence hotline for guidance or emergency services.

In Summary

In all, Smith Lodge provides a structured, co-ed sober living environment geared to help adults in early recovery work towards independent living and mainstream social integration. With a focus on accountability, peer support and 12-step participation, the program helps guide residents towards employment, community contribution or completing their education. Because Smith Lodge is a relatively hands-off program designed to give residents autonomy, those in need of more supervised transitional living may want to look at one of Mission, Inc.’s other programs. However, for final stage transitional programs, Smith Lodge is a worthy and affordable choice.

The Cronin Home

Rochester MinnesotaThe Basics

The Cronin Home in Rochester, Minnesota provides transitional housing for homeless, newly clean and sober men and women. The Cronin Home is named after Pat Cronin, a recovering alcoholic who from 1940 until his death, spread the message of AA throughout Minnesota and devoted his life to help fellow alcoholics and addicts. Founded in 1980 by a local businessman and substance abuse counselor, The Cronin Home is currently run by executive director Michael Frisch, who just celebrated 26 years of sobriety and is a LADC.

Accommodations and Amenities

The Cronin Home usually maintains a 96% occupancy rate. While there is often a waiting list, residents are not admitted in the order they apply, but according to need. A man who is living by a dumpster will be admitted before the man who has a roof over his head. The Cronin Home is co-ed, and has an upstairs area, which accommodates 36 men, as well as a separate wing that houses eight women.

Residents are paired in comfortable, dorm-style rooms, which include twin beds, two dressers, two nightstands and lamps. One TV is allowed in each room, but residents must supply it. Each resident is allowed to make three nail holes in the walls to put up photos. Amenities include a TV with cable, laundry facilities, detergent, bus vouchers for residents in need (on a first come, first served basis) and emergency transportation for residents in need of medical care. There is no Wi-Fi on-site, but residents are encouraged to use the Internet at the local Rochester Public library.

Clients are served three meals a day, Mondays through Fridays cafeteria-style. They start the day with a continental breakfast, followed by lunch, which usually consists of sandwiches made from dinner leftovers. Dinner is served Mondays through Fridays, from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Saturdays, and Sundays, residents are served a large brunch at 11:30 am. The kitchen is open 24 hours, seven days a week. There is always food available. This includes leftovers, coffee, bread, snacks, milk, sandwich meat, condiments and cookies.

Rules and Regulations

While The Cronin Home expects total abstinence, residents are not required to attend 12-step meetings. The Cronin Home focuses primarily on fulfilling the basic needs of residents, which includes providing housing and food. The organization’s philosophy is that if residents have a safe clean environment and eat nutritious meals, they will be able to make better decisions about their lives. According to Frisch, housing and food is the first priority at The Cronin Home, before a newly clean and sober resident can pursue a recovery protocol, such as a 12-step program.

Prior to admittance, residents must have undergone detox. Often The Cronin Home gets referrals from detox facilities, hospitals, court services and drug rehabs. Those with severe mental or medical health impairments are not admitted, as The Cronin Home does not provide treatment. Residents on methadone maintenance are allowed entry, however, all medication is monitored and dispensed by a staff nurse.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted, and residents who relapse must leave the premises, but they are often transported to a detox facility. Those that refuse to go must leave the building until all chemical substances leave their systems. After they return, they are placed on a 48-hour in-house restriction.

The curfew is 10 pm seven days a week. While not mandated, residents are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings. Additionally, there is one in-house Wednesday evening AA meeting. Residents must also attend the monthly house meeting. Besides drinking and using, residents aren’t allowed to sneak in pets, including fish, hoard food in their rooms, get involved in intimate relationships with other residents or exhibit foul or abusive behavior. Any violations may result in immediate expulsion from the premises.

Extras

Other services besides housing include job assistance and registered nurses on staff.

Most residents receive Group Residential Housing assistance, which covers their housing fees. The out-of-pocket, 30-day cost is $1,350.

In Summary

With Frisch at the helm, The Cronin Home is a wonderful option for financially challenged, newly clean and sober men and women. The Cronin Home offers men and women a chance to get their basic needs as human beings met. By improving the quality of their lives, and offering a sober milieu, clients stand a chance at sobriety.
